Ringed Birds

 
 
Introduction

From May 1 – 15, 2011 I spent two weeks with my wife in Menorca. Birds seen on the hiking tours and all other opportunities are given in the following report.

Itinerary
May 1, 2011: Flight with AirBerlin from Berlin-Tegel to the airport of Menorca near Mahón. Arrival at 9.15 a.m. Take-over of a prepaid rented car from Hiper Rent a Car. Drive on Me-14, Me-12, and Me-8 via Sant Lluís to S'Algar. Accommodation for the next 14 nights in a bungalow of the holiday residence Las Palmeras. After the arrival at about 11.00 a.m. walk along the coastal route to the harbour and the centre of the holiday resort. In the afternoon drive to the Talayot of Trebulúger (Talayot de Trebulúger), a prehistoric monument from about 1400 a. Chr. Thereafter drive to Fort Malborrough and the harbour of Mahón.
May 2, 2011: In the afternoon walk on the Camí de Cavalls up to Binissaida. Birdwatching in the garrigue and the rural surroundings.
May 3, 2011: Hiking tour from the car park of Es Grau along the beach of Es Grau, Cala des Tamarells, and Cala de sa Torreta to the prehistoric monument of Sa Torre Blanca and back.
May 4, 2011: In the morning birdwatching from the coastal road of S'Algar. Thereafter drive on the roads Me-8 and Me-1 via Sant Lluís and Mahón to Ciutadella. After sightseeing in the city visit of the prehistoric monuments of Son Catlar.
May 5, 2011: In the morning birdwatching in the surroundings of the Hotel Las Palmeras. Thereafter hiking tour along the coastline from S'Algar via Alcalfar to Punta Prima, the most southern point of Menorca.
May 6, 2011: Drive on the roads Me-8, Me-7, and Me-5 via Sant Lluís and Mahón to Es Grau. Hiking tour on the Camí de Cavalls to the northern edge of the water expanses of the Nature Reserve of Albufera d'es Grau. Thereafter drive on the roads Me-5, Me-7, and Me-13 to Fornells. On the tour back visit of Cap de Favàritx with the lighthouse.
May 7, 2011: Drive from S'Algar via Sant Lluís to Mahón. Sightseeing in the capital and thereafter birdwatching in the Parc des Freginal.
May 8, 2011: Drive from S'Algar via Sant Lluís and Mahón on the roads Me-8, Me-7, and Me-13 to the abandoned saltworks Ses Salines near Fornells. In the afternoon birdwatching in the wetland of Tirant and hiking tour from the ecologic museum of Santa Teresa to Cap de Cavalleria with the lighthouse
May 9, 2011: Drive on road Me-8 and Me-1 via Sant Lluís and Mahón to Alaior. After a visit of this small town drive to the prehistoric monuments of Torre d'en Gaumes and Torralba den Salord.
May 10, 2011: In the morning hiking tour along the Camí de Cavalls in northern direction and birdwatching in the garrigue.
May 11, 2011: In the morning birdwatching in the surroundings of the Hotel Las Palmeras. Thereafter drive to Son Bou via Sant Lluís, Mahón , and Alaior via the roads Me-8 and Me-1. Birdwatching in the dunes between the sea and the wetland.
May 12, 2011: Drive from S'Algar via Sant LLuís, Mahon, Alaior, and Ferreries to Cala Santa Galdana on the roads Me-8, Me-1, and Me-22. Hiking tour in the Barranco de Algendar. In the afternoon drive via Ferreries and Es Mercadal to the top of El Toro, the highest point of Menorca (358 m above sea level).
May 13, 2011: In the morning drive from S'Algar via Sant Lluís and Mahon on the roads Me-8, Me-7, and Me-5 to the Nature Reserve Albufera d'es Grau. Birdwatching on the water expanses from the hide Aguait de Biel at the southern edge of the water expanses. Thereafter drive on the roads Me-5 and Me-7 to Son Parc and later to the abandoned saltworks at the edge of the Badia de Fornells and once again to the wetland of Tirant.
May 14, 2011: Drive from S'Algar via Sant Lluís and Mahón on road Me-1 to Naveta des Tudons. Visit of the prehistoric monument and birdwatching in the surroundings. Thereafter visit of the caves in Cala Morell and drive to Fornells.
May 15, 2011: In the morning drive to the airport of Menorca near Mahón and flight with AirBerlin back to Berlin-Tegel.

Registration of the observations
All ornithological observations were registered in the databank OrniDB97–2.20, developed by Ralf Schirmeister (www.ralf-schirmeister.de for download) and were edited in two different ways. Under the heading "Excursions" one finds the complete records to the different observation places in chronological order. Under the heading "Species List" one finds the date, the place, and the number of observed individuals in systematic order. In the section Excursions some photos give an impression of the visited areas, in the Species List one finds some photos of birds taken by a Canon EOS 1D Mark III in combination with a telephoto lens Canon EF 600 mm, f/4L IS USM and the Extender EF 2x II.

The old saltworks Ses Salines are situated south of the settlement with the same name, which probably belongs to Fornells. Coming on road Me-15 from Es Mercadal we followed the signpost to Ses Salines. We parked the car near the Restaurante Ses Salines and walked directly between the water's edge and the Club Nautic Fornells southwards (P106-0611). After about 500 m we reached the small stripe of land between the lagoon and the abandoned saltworks (P106-0605). From there we had a good look on the water expanses of the old saltpans (P106-0600). – The following bird species could be observed.

From other points the view on the water expanse was obstructed by a wast vegetation of tamarisk trees. Nevertheless, the following bird species were observed.

After about 500 m one takes a path on the left hand and reaches the saltwork after another 1000 m. The saltworks should be promising during migration.
