Introduction

From October 24–31, 2004 I spent 7 days for birdwatching in Mallorca (Spain). I arrived by plain at 15:00 on the airport of Palma de Mallorca. There I took over a prepaid car and drove to Alcúdia at the north-eastern coast of Mallorca, where I had booked an accommodation with half-board in the Hotel Alcudi-Mar. From this base I reached many interesting sites between the Cúber Reservoir (Embassament de Cúber) in the Tramuntana Mountains in the north and the Salinas de Levante near Colònia de Sant Jordi in the south with the rented car. Many of the visited places I knew already from my first stay on Mallorca in 1997.

Itinerary
October 24, 2004: Flight from Berlin to Palma de Mallorca. Arrival at 15:00. Take-over of a rented car and drive on the motor highway via Inca to the Hotel Alcúdi-Mar in Alcúdia. It was already to late for a first excursion, when I arrived at 18.30 in the hotel.
October 25, 2004: Drive to the nearby Parc Natural de s’Albufera. Birdwatching up to the evening.
October 26, 2004: Drive via Can Picafort, Santa Margalida, Petra, Manacor, Felanitx and Campos to the Salinas de Levante. Birdwatching in the saltworks up to 16.00. Drive to Colònia de Sant Jordi for seawatching. Thereafter return to Alcúdia.
October 27, 2004: Drive to Cap de Formentor via Port de Pollença. Seawatching from vantage points at the road PM-221. Birdwatching in the surroundings of Cases Velles and the Hotel Formentor. In the afternoon walk in the Bóquer Valley near Port de Pollença.
October 28, 2004: Drive via Can Picafort to Colònia de Sant Pere and Betlem. Walk along the coast up to Punta des Caló. Then drive via Artá into the Artá Mountains. Hiking tour from the road PMV-3333 to the Puig de sa Tudossa.
October 29, 2004: Drive to the Cúber reservoir in the Tramuntana Mountains via Port de Pollença, Pollença, and Lluc. Walk around the reservoir. In the late afternoon birdwatching and digiscoping at the beach of Port de Pollença.
October 30, 2004: Once again drive to the Parc Natural de s’Albufera. Birdwatching up to 16:20. Thereafter drive to the Albufereta Marsh between Alcúdia and Port de Pollença.
October 31, 2004: In the morning drive to the airport of Palma de Mallorca. Flight back to Berlin.

Registration of the observations
All ornithological observations were registered in the databank OrniDB97–2.20, developed by Ralf Schirmeister (www.ralf-schirmeister.de for download) and were edited in two different ways. Under the heading "Excursions" one finds the complete records to the different observation places in chronological order. Under the heading "Species List" one finds the date, the place, and the number of observed individuals in systematic order.

Albufereta marsh, Mallorca (Spain)

To have a look on the lake of the Albufereta Marsh near the road PM-222 from Alcúdia to Port de Pollença I parked the car about 400 m south of the bridge over the Torrente de Albufereta. With a telescope birds of the size of a Kentish Plover could well be recognized from the way. Whether there was still a path along the edge of the water I did not investigate.
