Ringed Birds

Introduction

From May 20 – 29, 2008 I spent again 10 days in  Andalucía  and Extremadura in Spain. I was accompanied by Stefan Wedler. We visited some well known places in the Province of Málaga in Andaucía, but spent most of our time in the Province of Cáceres in Extremadura.

Itinerary
May 20, 2008: Direct flight from Berlin-Schönefeld to Málaga with EasyJet. Arrival in Málaga at 19.40. Take-over of a rented car from malagacar.com. Drive to the Hotel Marina Sur in Torremolinos.
May 21, 2008: Drive from Hotel Marina Sur in Torremolinos on the road N-340 to Guadalmar. Birdwatching in the Parque Natural Desembocadura del Río Guadalhorce. In the afternoon drive on the highways A-7, A-45, and A-92 to Fuente de Piedra. Birdwatching around the visitor's centre José Antonio Valverde. Thereafter drive to Antequera. Accommodation for one night in the Hotel Coso Viejo.
May 22, 2008: Drive from Antequera on the roads N-331, N-432, N-502, A-420, EX-322, Ba-035, EX-A2, and EX-208 via Córdoba, Cabeza de Buey, and Trujillo to Torrejón el Rubio. Accomodation in the Hotel Carvajal for the next six nights. In the evening walk to the reservoir east of Torrejón.
May 23, 2008: Drive on road EX-208 to kilometre 71.3, then on the road to Monroy. Several stops in the steppeland for birdwatching. Due to strong rain return to Torrejón el Rubio in the early afternoon.
May 24, 2008: Drive on road EX-208 from Torrejón el Rubio to Salto del Gitano in the Parque Nacional de Monfragüe. After taking photos of Griffon Vultures drive to the Mirador deTaradilla. Due to rain drive via Serrejón to the autovía A-5 (E-90) near Almaraz. From there heading on A-5, EX-385, and EX-208 via Jaraicejo to Torrejón el Rubio.
May 25, 2008: In the morning drive from Torrejón el Rubio on the roads EX-208 and EX-385 almost to Jaraicejo. Several stops for birdwatching between kilometre 11 and 5. In the afternoon drive from Torrejón el Rubio on the road EX-390 to the colony of White Storks in umbrella pines at kilometre 30.1. In the late evening drive from Torrejón to the reservoirs east of the settlement.
May 26, 2008: Once again drive to the colony of White Storks at kilometre 30.1 of road EX-390. After taking more pictures of the colony heading on road EX-390 to Monroy and the bridge over the river Almonte. Thereafter drive via Santa Marta de Magasca and Trujillo to the steppeland east of Belén. After birdwatching return to Torrejón el Rubio via Torrecillas de la Tiesa and Jaraicejo.
May 27, 2008: Drive from Torrejón el Rubio on road EX-208 to the bridge over the Arroyo de la Vid and to Salto del Gitano. After taking photos of several bird species heading for Portilla del Tiétar. After birdwatching in this interesting area return drive to Torreón el Rubio.
May 28, 2008: After a drive of more than 500 km via Trujillo, Cabeza del Buey, Córdoba, Antequera, and Campillos arrival in Ronda (Provincia de Málaga, Andalucía) in the evening. Walk to the Puente Nuevo before sunset.
May 29, 2008: In the morning a second walk to the Puente Nuevo, thereafter drive from Ronda to Guadalmar on the roads EX-376 and A-7 via Marbella and Torremolinos. Birdwatching in the Parque Natural Decembocadura del Guadalhorce. At 17.30 return to  the Airport of Málaga and flight back to Berlin-Schönefeld.

Registration of the observations
All ornithological observations were registered in the databank OrniDB97–2.20, developed by Ralf Schirmeister (www.ralf-schirmeister.de for download) and were edited in two different ways. Under the heading "Excursions" one finds the complete records to the different observation places in chronological order. Under the heading "Species List" one finds the date, the place, and the number of observed individuals in systematic order. In the section Excursions some photos give an impression of the visited areas, in the Species List one finds some photos of birds taken by a Canon EOS 1D Mark III in combination with a telephoto lens Canon EF 600 mm, f/4L IS USM and the Extender EF 2x II.

The following 33 bird species were observed in the Parque Natural Desembocadura del Guadalhorce.
Little Grebe (Pódiceps ruficóllis, Zwergtaucher): 1 adult, with 1 pullus.
Great Cormorant (Phalacrócorax carbo, Kormoran): 1, flying.
Little Egret (Egrétta garzétta, Seidenreiher): 4, 3 of them at the river bank, 1 flying.
Gadwall (Anas strepéra, Schnatterente): 4 (2,2), swimming.
Common Pochard (Áythya férina, Tafelente): 18, swimming.
White-headed Duck (Oxyura leucocephala, Weißkopf-Ruderente): 3 males, swimming.

The following bird species were observed in the steppeland of La Serena along the road BA-035:
Cattle Egret (Bubúlcus ibis, Kuhreiher): 20 (at least), among grazing sheeps on steppeland.
White Stork (Cicónia cicónia, Weißstorch): 15 (at least), on steppeland.
Mallard (Anas platyrhýnchos, Stockente): 1, flying.
Montagu’s Harrier (Circus pygargus, Wiesenweihe): 3 males, flying.
Common Buzzard (Búteo búteo, Mäusebussard): 1, roosting on a rock, then flying off.
Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus, Gänsegeier): 52 (at least), 12 of them circling over the steppeland, 40 roosting on the ground near the road.

Common Morhen (Gallínula chlóropus, Teichralle): 2, 1 in the reed of the river, 1 on the edge of the reservoir.

Collared Turtle Dove (Streptopélia decaócto, Türkentaube): 1, calling.
Hoopoe (Úpupa epops, Wiedehopf): 1, calling.

Trujillo-Monroy road starts at kilometre 71.3 of the road EX-208. The road leads through dehesas and steppeland. Due to strong rain the birdwatching was stopped at the junction to Santa Marta de Magasca. – The following 31 bird species were observed from several stops along the road.
Cattle Egret (Bubúlcus ibis, Kuhreiher): 4, flying.
White Stork (Cicónia cicónia, Weißstorch): 20 (at least), on steppeland or flying.
Black Kite (Milvus migrans, Schwarzmilan): 5 (at least), flying over steppeland and dehesas.
Spanish Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti, Spanischer Kaiseradler): 3, roosting separately on the ruin of a house or on rocks in steppeland. Dark (black) birds with white head and shoulders. – First personal observation.
Booted Eagle (Hieráætus pennátus, Zwergadler): 1, flying.
Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus, Gänsegeier): 15 (at least), flying over the steppeland.
Black Vulture (Aegypius monáchus, Mönchsgeier): 1, circling over steppeland.

Azure-winged Magpie (Cyanopica cyanus, Blauelster): 15 (at least), flying, in the dehesas.
Black-billed Magpie (Pica pica, Elster): 4, flying or on a stone wall.
Jackdaw (Corvus monédula, Dohle): 4, at the road Ex-208.
Common Raven (Corvus corax, Kolkrabe): 1, flying.
Spotless Starling (Sturnus unícolor, Einfarbstar): 12 (at least), on steppeland or in the surrounding of a farm.
Spanish Sparrow (Passer hispaniolénsis, Weidensperling): 150 (at least), 100 of them flying as large flock, 50 in a breeding colony in an Eucalyptus plantation.
Corn Bunting (Emberíza calándra, Grauammer): 4, on a stone wall.

The following bird species were observed from the vantage point of Salto del Gitano. At 10.00 a.m. we returned to the hotel in Torrejón el Rubio for breakfast. Thereafter we came back and continued birdwatching and taking photos of Griffon Vultures.
Black Stork (Cicónia nigra, Schwarzstorch): 2, at their nest in a rock cave.
Black Kite (Milvus migrans, Schwarzmilan): 1, flying.
Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus, Gänsegeier): 100 (at least), roosting on the cliffs or flying.
Crag Martin (Ptyonoprógne rupéstris, Felsenschwalbe): 4, flying.
Common Wren (Troglodýtes troglodýtes, Zaunkönig): 1, singing.
Blue Rock Thrush (Montícola solitárius, Blaumerle): 1, on the cliffs.

Crag Martin (Ptyonoprógne rupéstris, Felsenschwalbe): 10, flying.
Common Wren (Troglodýtes troglodýtes, Zaunkönig): 1, singing.
Chough (Pyrrhócorax pyrrhócorax, Alpenkrähe): 20 (at least), flying or roosting in a rock face.

Common Swift (Apus apus, Mauersegler): 20 (at least), flying.
Barn Swallow (Hirúndo rústica, Rauchschwalbe): 5 (at least), flying.
House Martin (Délichon úrbica, Mehlschwalbe): 10 (at least), flying.
Crag Martin (Ptyonoprógne rupéstris, Felsenschwalbe): 10 (at least), flying.
Common Wren (Troglodýtes troglodýtes, Zaunkönig): 1, singing.

The following 28 bird species were observed in the Paraje natural Desembocadura del Guadalhorce.
Little Egret (Egrétta garzétta, Seidenreiher): 2, in shallow water.
Common Spoonbill (Platálea leucoródia, Löffler): 2, landing in shallow water.
Common Pochard (Áythya férina, Tafelente): 2 (1,1), swimming.
Black Coot (Fúlica atra, Bleßralle): 23, swimming.
Black-winged Stilt (Himántopus himántopus, Stelzenläufer): 25 (at least), in shallow water of the whole Nature Reserve. In addition there were at least 20 chicks.
Eurasian Avocet (Recurviróstra avosétta, Säbelschnäbler): 5, in front of the western hide.
Ringed Plover (Charádrius hiatícula, Sandregenpfeifer): 1, in front of the western hide.
Kentish Plover (Charádrius alexandrínus, Seeregenpfeifer): 8, on the shore of the old river.
Red Knot (Calídris canútus, Knutt): 2, in shallow water of the old river. The birds were in breeding plumage.
Little Stint (Calídris minúta, Zwergstrandläufer): 1, in shallow water of the old river.
Curlew Sandpiper (Calídris ferrugínea, Sichelstrandläufer): 3, in shallow water of the old river.
Dunlin (Calídris alpína, Alpenstrandläufer): 50 (at least), in shallow water of the old river.
Bar-tailed Godwit (Limósa lappónica, Pfuhlschnepfe): 1, in shallow water of the old river.
Spotted Redshank (Tringa erýthropus, Dunkler Wasserläufer): 1, in shallow water. Unambiguously identified on photos. Red on bill restricted to lower mandible.
Redshank (Tringa tótanus, Rotschenkel): 2, in shallow water of the old river.
Black-headed Gull (Larus ridibúndus, Lachmöwe): 3, swimming.
Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis, Mittelmeermöwe): 50, roosting on the beach.
Slender-billed Gull (Larus genei, Dünnschnabelmöwe): 45, 25 of them in shallow water of the old river, 20 in front of the western hide.
Audouin’s Gull (Larus audouinii, Korallenmöwe): 6, 5 of them in shallow water of the old river, one in front of the western hide.
Sandwich Tern (Sterna sandvicénsis, Brandseeschwalbe): 5, at the shore of the old river.
Collared Turtle Dove (Streptopélia decaócto, Türkentaube): 50 (at least), flying or roosting in tamarisk shrubs at the water's edge.
Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monáchus, Mönchssittich): 1, calling in flight.
Barn Swallow (Hirúndo rústica, Rauchschwalbe): 5, flying.
House Martin (Délichon úrbica, Mehlschwalbe): 50 (at least), flying.
Great Tit (Parus major, Kohlmeise): 1, in a shrub.
House Sparrow (Passer domésticus, Haussperling): 5, near houses.
Greenfinch (Chloris chloris, Grünfink): 1, in a shrub.
Goldfinch (Carduélis carduélis, Stieglitz): 6, in shrubs.
