Ringed birds

Introduction

From May 12 – 22, 2009 I spent together with Stefan Wedler 10 days in  Cataluña, mostly in the estuary of the River Ebro in the surroundings of Deltebre. However, we visited also the Reserva Natural Remolar-Filipines near the Airport of Barcelona, the Park Natural Els Ports de Tortosa, and the Ramsar site El Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca (in Valencia).

Itinerary
May 12, 2009: Arrival at Barcelona Airport by EasyJet from Berlin-Schönefeld at 11:20. Take-over of a pre-paid rented car and drive on the road C-31 and the highway AP-7 via Castelldefels, Tarragona, l'Ampolla and Deltebre to Riumar at the mouth of the River Ebro. Accommodation for the next ten nights in an appartment of the ApartHotel Ecodunas not far from the Mediterranean Sea. In the evening a walk along the coastline and to the River Ebro.
May 13, 2009: Drive on road T-340 to Deltebre. Visit of the information centre. Crossing the River Ebro with a ferryboat and drive on the roads TV-3404 and TV-3405 via Sant Jaume d'Enveja and Urbanizació Eucaliptus to the hide of La Tancada. In the afternoon continuation of the drive to Salinas de la Trinidad and Punta de la Banya.
May 14, 2009: In the morning drive from Riumar to the observation tower at Canal Vell, in the afternoon drive to Lo Goleró and walk along the coast to La Bassa de les Olles. Thereafter return tour along the western shoreline of the lake.
May 15, 2009: In the morning drive on roads T-340 and TV-3451 via Deltebre to Mas dels Bascos, some abandoned  houses at the Mediterranean coast. Due to strong sand drifts the peninsula with Punta del Fangar was not accessible. After  some birdwatching in the paddyfields around Mas dels Bascos return to Deltebre and drive on road TV-3454 to Amposta. Crossing the River Ebro on road N-340 near Amposta, drive on this road to Sant Carles de la Ràpita, and from there to Poble Nou del Delta. In the afternoon birdwatching from three observation towers around the water expanse of l'Encannyissada.
May 16, 2009: Drive from Riumar on road T-340 to Deltebre, crossing the River Ebro with a ferryboat and continuation from Sant Jaume d'Enveja on the roads TV-3404 and TV-3405 to La Tancada. In the afternoon birdwatching from the observationtowers of l'Embut and of Través (Mirador de l'Embut and Mirador del Través).
May 17, 2009: In the morning drive from Riumar via Deltebre and Sant Jaume d'Enveja to Cas de Sifon, the most western point of Illa de Buda. After birdwatching in the surrounding paddyfields continuation of the drive to the observation tower of L'Aufacada (Mirador de L'Aufacada). In the afternoon once again drive to La Tancada and the Salinas de la Trinidad. On the back journey stop at the hide of Riet Vell.
May 18, 2009: Drive from Riumar on the roads T-340, N-340, and C-42 via Deltebre, L'Aldea, Tortosa, and Rosquetes to Mount Caro (1447 m over sea level). Birdwatching in the Parque Natural Els Ports de Tortosa.
May 19, 2009: Drive from Riumar on the roads T-340, TV-3454, AP-7, and N-340 via Deltebre, Amposta, and Torreblanca to the Parc Natural del Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca. Birdwatching along the coastline and in the wetland.
May 20, 2009: Drive from Riumar via Deltebre and Sant Jaume d'Enveja to the hide of Riet Vell. Birdwatching up to the afternoon.
May 21, 2009: Last drive to the Mirador de Través and birdwatching on the water expanses of l'Encannyissada.
May 22, 2009: At the end of the stay in the delta of the River Ebro drive on the highway AP-7 and the road C-31 to Barcelona. Visit of the nature reserve Remolar-Filipines near the airport of Barcelona. In the evening direct flight to Berlin-Schönefeld by EasyJet.

Registration of the observations
All ornithological observations were registered in the databank OrniDB97–2.20, developed by Ralf Schirmeister (www.ralf-schirmeister.de for download) and were edited in two different ways. Under the heading "Excursions" one finds the complete records to the different observation places in chronological order. Under the heading "Species List" one finds the date, the place, and the number of observed individuals in systematic order. In the section Excursions some photos give an impression of the visited areas, in the Species List one finds some photos of birds taken by a Canon EOS 1D Mark III in combination with a telephoto lens Canon EF 600 mm, f/4L IS USM and the Extender EF 2x II.

Little Egret (Egrétta garzétta, Seidenreiher): 3, in shallow water.
Great White Egret (Casmerodius albus, Silberreiher): 1, on the shore. The bill was yellow.
Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber, Rosaflamingo): 500 (at least), in shallow water.
Gadwall (Anas strepéra, Schnatterente): 2 (1,1), swimming.
Mallard (Anas platyrhýnchos, Stockente): 200 (at least), swimming or roosting on the shore.

During a walk along the beach at th eastern side of the saltworks to the observation tower (1500 m) the following bird species were observed.
Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber, Rosaflamingo): 70, in the shallow water of the inland lagoons.
Shelduck (Tadórna tadórna, Brandgans): 4, swimming on the inland lagoons.
Black-winged Stilt (Himántopus himántopus, Stelzenläufer): 2, at the edge of the inland lagoons.
Kentish Plover (Charádrius alexandrínus, Seeregenpfeifer): 20 (at least), at the edge of the inland lagoons.
Sanderling (Calídris alba, Sanderling): 20 (at least), at the beach and at the edge of the inland lagoons.
Little Stint (Calídris minúta, Zwergstrandläufer): 1, at the water's edge. Smaller than a Sanderling.
Ruddy Turnstone (Arenária ínterpres, Steinwälzer): 3, on the beach.
Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis, Mittelmeermöwe): 10, roosting on sands.

The following 24 birdspecies were observed during a walk from Lo Goleró to La Bassa de les Olles.
Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus, Zwergdommel): 1, flying. During the flight the bird displays the characteristic white fields in the black wings.
Little Egret (Egrétta garzétta, Seidenreiher): 6 (at least), flying.
Common Heron (Árdea cinérea, Graureiher): 2, in shallow water of the sea.
Purple Heron (Árdea purpúrea, Purpurreiher): 1, flying.
Squacco Heron (Ardéola ralloídes, Rallenreiher): 1, flying.
Mallard (Anas platyrhýnchos, Stockente): 200 (at least), swimming or flying.

The trip to the Penninsula Punta del Fanfar was stopped at Mas dels Bascos. Due to sand drift the road was not passable. Therefore, we turned back. The following bird species were observed in the paddyfields in the surroundings of Restaurant Vascos.
Little Egret (Egrétta garzétta, Seidenreiher): 3, on a paddyfield.
Squacco Heron (Ardéola ralloídes, Rallenreiher): 1, on the dam of a paddyfield.
Mallard (Anas platyrhýnchos, Stockente): 20 (at least), on a paddyfield.
Black-winged Stilt (Himántopus himántopus, Stelzenläufer): 3, on a paddyfield.

Overall-length at least 1 metre. (Marderartiges unbestimmtes Tier mit walzenförmigem hellbraunem Körper, grauem Gesicht mit kurzen Ohren, langem farbig geringeltem, katzenartigem Schwanz. Gesamtlänge: mindestens 1 m. Das Tier schlüpfte durch die Pflanzenschicht des Marschlandes).

The Mirador de l´Embut is situated at the northern side of the Lake el Clot, the eastern part of the lake l'Encanyissada. – The following birdspecies could be observed.
Little Grebe (Pódiceps ruficóllis, Zwergtaucher): 3, swimming.
Little Egret (Egrétta garzétta, Seidenreiher): 2, flying.

Montagu’s Harrier (Circus pygargus, Wiesenweihe): 2 (1,1), flying over the reedbeds. The upperparts of the male were grey, only the wingtips were black.
