Introduction
From Oktober 20 – 31, 2006 I spent 12 days in the Andalusian provinces of Málaga, Cádiz, and Sevilla. It was my third stay in this part of Southern Spain
in this year after visits in January and April.
Itinerary
October 20, 2006: Flight with EasyJet from Berlin-Schönefeld
to Málaga. Arrival at 20:20. Take-over of the prepaid rented car from Europcar.
Drive to the Hotel Las Palomas in Torremolinos.
October 21, 2006: Drive from Torremolinos to the
Nature Reserve Desembocadura del Rio Guadalhorce near Málaga. Birdwatching in
the area from 10.30 to 16.15. Drive to Antequera and accomodation in the Parador
Antequera.
October 22, 2006: Drive to the Laguna de Fuente de
Piedra. Visit of the exhibition in the Centro de Visitantes de José Antonio

Dulce and the Laguna Salada near Campillos, then back to Antequera via El Torcal.
Due to dense fog I turned back immediately after my arrival on the top of the
mountain.
October 23, 2006: Drive from Antequera via Málaga
along the road N-340 to Algeciras and Tarifa. Accommodation in the Hotel La
Torre at kilometre 77 of the N-340 for the next three nights. The birdwatching
in the afternoon at the Playa de los Lances was spoiled by continous rain.
October 24, 2006: Drive to Punto de Bolonia, Cabo
de Trafalgar, the Marismas de Barbate and to La Janda. Birdwatching in these
areas.
October 25, 2006: Drive to the Observatorio Ombligo
de San Francisco, to the Santuario de Nuestra Señora
de la Luz, to La Janda, and to the Quarry of Montenmedio
October 26, 2006: This day I finished my stay in
the Hotel La Torre near Tarifa and drove to Sanlúcar de Barrameda. From Vejers
de la Frontera I used the new Autovia A-48 via Chiclana to Jerez. Within less
than 2 hours I reached Sanlúcar, where I found an accomodation for the next four
nights in the Hotel Doñana. In the afternoon I watched
birds in the Salina de Bonanza.
October 27, 2006:
Drive to the Pinar de Algaida and to the Marismas of Trebujena. Birdwatching at
the Laguna de Tarelo and in the wetlands along the River Guadalquivir.
October 28, 2006: In the morning drive to Chipiona and
taking photos of roosting gulls. In the afternoon drive to Brazo del Este
through the former Marismas de Lebrija.
October 29, 2006: Drive to Sancti Petri via El Porto de Santa Maria and
Chiclana de la Frontera. Watching of birds on the mudflats near the
abandoned fishermen village.
October 30, 2006: In the morning I left Sanlúcar de Barrameda and drove back
to Málaga via Jerez and Chiclana. From Chiclana I turned to Medina Sidonia in
order to use the new Autovia A-381. Within two hours I reached Algeciras. Twenty
minutes later I left the N-340 at kilometre 133 and visited the nature reserves
at the mouth of the Río Guadiaro near Sotogrande. At 16:30 I left the area and
drove on the Autovia A-7P to Torremolinos, where I found again an accomodation
in the Hotel Las Palomas.
October 31, 2006: In the morning I drove to the nearby Airport of Málaga and
returned to Berlin by a direct flight of EasyJet to Schönefeld.
Registration of the observations
All ornithological observations were registered in the databank
OrniDB97–2.20, developed by Ralf Schirmeister (www.ralf-schirmeister.de for
download) and were edited in two different ways. Under the heading "Excursions"
one finds the complete records to the different observation places in
chronological order. Under the heading "Species List" one finds the date, the place, and the number of observed individuals
in systematic order. In the section Excursions some photos give an impression
of the visited areas, in the Species List one finds some photos of birds
taken by a Canon EOS 20D in combination with a telephoto lens Canon EF 600 mm, f/4L IS USM
and the Extender EF 2x II.
