Introduction

This year I spent two weeks with my wife in the Algarve (Portugal). We arrived by plain at Faro Aerport. There we took over a prepaid car and drove to Carvoeiro, where we had booked a hotel with half-board. During the two weeks I had the opportunity to visit different landscapes of southern Portugal between the Guadiana river at the Spanish border and the Cabo de Vicente, the most south western point of the Iberian Peninsula. Birds were seen during hiking tours in the Serra Monchique as well as along the steep coast of the Atlantic. But also on farmland or in villages birds were observed. Most productive, however, were the saltworks of Castro Marim near the Spanish border, the Environmental Education Centre of Quinta de Marim near Olhão, the saltworks of Ludo near Faro Aerport, and the Lagoon of Alvor near Portimão.

Registration of the observations
All ornithological observations were registered in the databank OrniDB97–2.20, developed by Ralf Schirmeister (www.ralf-schirmeister.de for download) and were edited in two different ways. Under the heading "Excursions" one finds the complete records to the different observation places in chronological order. Under the heading "Species List" one finds the date, the place, and the number of observed individuals in systematic order.

Information and maps for the orientation in the area
For orientation in the area I used the following map:

There I found a sign for Reserva Natural, turned off to the right and followed an unsurfaced road, which after another 1000 m underruns the motorway IP 1. Ria de Alvor (Lagoon of Alvor), Algarve (Portugal)
16 °C, overcast, permanently raining.
The Lagoon of Alvor (Ria de Alvor) is a well known place for birdwatching in the Algarve. The best place is the marshland opposite to the eastern dunes of the lagoon. This area is reached by car following the N 125 from Lagoa up to Mexilhoeira Grande. A signpost to a railway station (Estacao C. F.) stands on the left side of the road 100 m before one passes the junction to Mexilhoeira Grande. The turn off to the lagoon is a very small unmade road to the left directly opposite to the turn off to Mexilhoeira Grande. Having a garden centre to the right the unsurfaced road passes the railway and reaches the marshland south of the lagoon after 2,6 km. Turning to the left one reaches the car park after another 200 m. At the car park begins a round course on the dyke of the lagoon in western direction. After about 2 km the path turns northwards, and after 1 km eastwards back to the carpark. During the whole tour I could see my car on the car park. Walking along the dyke westwards I had the water or the sands of the lagoon to my left hand. To my right hand I had the marshland with low vegetation and several shallow water areas. On the way back I had marshland and muddy areas on both sides. – During the excursion along this path the following 33 bird species were observed on the sands of the lagoon or in the marshland. Low tide was today at 11:39 a.m., high tide at 17:59 p.m. Thus, at the end of the excursion the sands of the lagoon were again nearly completely flooded.
