Itinerary
June 5, 2004: Drive on a car from Bernöwe near Oranienburg, a district town north of Berlin, via Kietz/Kostrzyn to Słonsk. Accommodation in the recommendable Hotel Hubertus in Słonsk (PL-66-436 Slonsk, ul. 3-go Lutego 17, Tel. + 48 (0-95) 757 27 57). Birdwatching in the National Park along the River Postomia west of Słonsk. In the evening birdwatching in the xerothermic turfs east of the village Owczary and in the grassland and the forest at the eastbank of the River Odra. Owczary is situated about 12 km south of Kostrzyn and was reached by car from Słonsk via Górzyca.
June 6, 2004: Birdwatching in the wetlands of the National Park from the Warta dyke between Słonsk and Kłopotowo. In the afternoon drive back to Bernöwe.

Registration of the observations
All ornithological observations were registered in the databank OrniDB97–2.20, developed by Ralf Schirmeister (http://www.ralf-schirmeister.de for download) and were edited in two different ways. Under the heading "Excursions" one finds the complete records to the different observation places in chronological order. Under the heading "Species List" one finds the date, the place, and the number of observed individuals in systematic order.

Słońsk, District Gorzów (Poland)
16 ° C, overcast.
Starting at 8:45 in Bernöwe near Oranienburg, a district town north of Berlin, I reached the German-Polish border at Kietz/Kostrzyn at 10:30 and the Hotel Hubertus in Słońsk at 10:45. I parked the car in front of the hotel and rode on my bicycle via ul. Lipowa, ul. Wiejska, and the village Przyborów to the river Postomia west of the town. Then I walked westwards on the concrete road (betonka) along the river up to the bridge which marked the end of the accessible part of the reserve. – In Słońsk the following bird species were observed.
Street Pigeon (Colúmba lívia f. doméstica, Haustaube): 2.
Wood Pigeon (Colúmba palúmbus, Ringeltaube): 1, on a power line.
Collared Turtle Dove (Streptopélia decaócto, Türkentaube): 3, on a power line.
Yellow Wagtail (Motacílla flava, Schafstelze): 1, on a power line.
Black Redstart (Phoenicúrus ochrúros, Hausrotschwanz): 1, singing.
Lesser Whitethroat (Sýlvia currúca, Klappergrasmücke): 1, singing.
Great Tit (Parus major, Kohlmeise): 3, one of them singing.
Jackdaw (Corvus monédula, Dohle): 10 (at least).

16 – 19 °C, fair to overcast.
The following 48 bird species were observed from the concrete road (betonka) in the wetlands west of Słońsk.
Great Crested Grebe (Pódiceps cristátus, Haubentaucher): 1, swimming.
Black-necked Grebe (Pódiceps nigricóllis, Schwarzhalstaucher): 5, 3 ad. with 2 pulli.
Great Cormorant (Phalacrócorax carbo, Kormoran): 8, flying.
Common Heron (Árdea cinérea, Graureiher): 40 (at least), flying or standing on the wetland.
Black Stork (Cicónia nigra, Schwarzstorch): 2, flying.
White Stork (Cicónia cicónia, Weißstorch): 1, on grassland.
Mute Swan (Cygnus olor, Höckerschwan): 86 (5 + 3 + 13 + 15 + 50) ad., swimming.
Greylag Goose (Anser anser, Graugans): 300 (at least), on wetland.
Shelduck (Tadórna tadórna, Brandgans): 7, on wetland.
Gadwall (Anas strepéra, Schnatterente): 4 (2,2), swimming.
Mallard (Anas platyrhýnchos, Stockente): 310 (5 + 5 + 100 +200).
Garganey (Anas querquédula, Knäkente): 3 males, roosting on grassland (photos).
Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeáta, Löffelente): 10 (at least), swimming.

Black Coot (Fúlica atra, Bleßralle): 100 (at least), swimming.

From the Museum of the Meadows I walked through the grassland to the riverside of the Odra. – The following bird species were observed on the grassland.

From the Hotel Hubertus I rode on my bike to the pumping station at the dyke of the river Warta east of Słońsk. In the town the following bird species were observed.

Park Narodowy "Ujście Warty", east of Słońsk, District Gorzów (Poland)
14 – 22 °C, fair.
I rode with my bicycle via the pumping station on the dyke of the River Warta almost to Kłopotowo. I made also a detour into the wetland between the dyke and the River Warta. – The following 47 bird species were observed.
Great Cormorant (Phalacrócorax carbo, Kormoran): 4, flying.
Common Heron (Árdea cinérea, Graureiher): 15 (at least).
White Stork (Cicónia cicónia, Weißstorch): 3, 1 of them with juveniles on a nest near the pumping station.
White-tailed Eagle (Haliæëtus albicílla, Seeadler): 1, flying.
Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginósus, Rohrweihe): 1 female, flying.
Common Buzzard (Búteo búteo, Mäusebussard): 1, flying over grassland.
Pheasant (Phasiánus cólchicus, Fasan): 3, 2 of them only heard.
Common Snipe (Galinágo gallinágo, Bekassine): 3, drumming, also seen.
