Introduction

From December 28 – January 02, 2013 I spent with my wife our end of year holydays in Troms
ø. Having enjoyed the midnight sun last sommer in the Lofoten (Nordland county, Norway), we were keen to see the northern lights in this area north of the arctic circle. I was also interested to learn, which birdspecies were able to stay and to survive in a territory, where in midwinter (winter solstice) the sun does not rise for several weeks.

Itinerary
December 28, 2012: Flight from Berlin-Schönefeld via Oslo to Troms
ø. Arrival on the airport at 19:30. Drive with the airport shuttle to City Living Hotel in the town centre.
December 29, 2012: Walk from City Living Hotel in the Gr
ønnagata to the Tromsøbrua (Tromsø bridge), the Ishavskatedralen (Arctic Cathedral), and the valley station of the Fjellheisen Cable Car. Registration of the birds seen in the harbour and on the fjord.
December 30, 2012:
Again walk from City Living Hotel
to the Tromsøbrua (Tromsø bridge) and the Ishavskatedralen (Arctic Cathedral). In the evening and in the night northern lights chase with a bus in the surroundings of Tromsø.
December 31, 2012: Walk along the fjord from Polaria to Rica Ishavshotel. Registration of the birds seen on the fjord and in the harbour.
January, 01, 2013: Walk along the fjord from Rica Ishavshotel to Polaria. Registration of the birds seen on the fjord and in the harbour.
January, 02, 2013: At 5:30 drive with the airport shuttle to the airport and from there flight with Norwegian via Oslo to Berlin-Schönefeld. Arrival in Berlin at 11:00.

Registration of the observations
All ornithological observations were registered in the databank OrniDB97–2.20, developed by Ralf Schirmeister (www.ralf-schirmeister.de for download) and were edited in two different ways. Under the heading "Excursions" one finds the complete records to the different observation places in chronological order. Under the heading "Species List" one finds the date, the place, and the number of observed individuals in systematic order. In the section Excursions some photos give an impression of the visited areas. There was not enough light in the arctic night to take acceptable photos of birds by a Canon EOS 1D Mark III in combination with a telephoto lens EF 100-400 mm, f/4.5-5.6L IS USM and Extender 1.4x II.
