Common Swift (Apus apus, Mauersegler): 20 (at least), flying. Barn Swallow (Hirúndo rústica, Rauchschwalbe): 4, flying into the interior of an abandoned house. Sardinian Warbler (Sýlvia melanocéphala, Samtkopfgrasmücke): 1, singing in a shrub, also seen in flight. Great Tit (Parus major, Kohlmeise): 1, calling. Spotless Starling (Sturnus unícolor, Einfarbstar): 3, on a roof. Spanish Sparrow (Passer hispaniolénsis, Weidensperling): 10 (at least), on roofs. Greenfinch (Chloris chloris, Grünfink): 2, calling.

This place was reached from Tresnuraghes following the signposts to the Santuario di San Marco. The small road has a length of 11 km and is unpaved at the end. – The following bird species were observed along the road and in the surroundings of the Torre di Foghe, the remainders of an old Spanish watch tower. Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis, Mittelmeermöwe): 200 (at least), flying or roosting on rocks in the sea. Bee-eater (Merops apiaster, Bienenfresser): 1, on a power line. Barn Swallow (Hirúndo rústica, Rauchschwalbe): 2, flying. Crag Martin (Ptyonoprógne rupéstris, Felsenschwalbe): 4, flying in the surroundings of the Torre di Foghe. Stonechat (Saxícola torquáta, Schwarzkehlchen): 2 (1,1), on a herbaceous perennial. Northern Wheatear (Oenánthe oenánthe, Steinschmätzer): 1 male, on a stone. Greenfinch (Chloris chloris, Grünfink): 1, flying. 23.04.2008, 09:30-12:30 Badde Orca, Provincia di Sassari (Sardinia, Italy) 15 °C, changing between overcast and fair. To reach the observation area one has to follow the road SP 19 from Bosa towards Montresta. After 9,4 km one has to head to the left to Badde Orca. This road ends at two closed gates, where the car can be parked at the edge of the road. From that point one has to walk along a free accessible track between stone walls and shrubs. After about 500 m one reaches pasture land and has to cross a stone wall and walk to the edge of the slope, from where one has a good look over the coastal road to the sea. – In the course of a tour, guided by a local expert for the protection of Griffon Vultures, the following bird species were observed in this area. Common Buzzard (Búteo búteo, Mäusebussard): 2, flying. Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus, Gänsegeier): 20 (at least), flying in the valley or overhead. Kestrel (Falco tinnúnculus, Turmfalke): 1, hovering. Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni, Rötelfalke): 1, flying along the slope. Little Owl (Athéne nóctua, Steinkauz): 1, on a rock in a meadow. Wood Lark (Lúllula arbórea, Heidelerche): 2, on rocks. This area was reached from the previous observation point by heading on the unpaved road about 1000 m in a westerly direction up to the edge of the large water expanse. – The following bird species were observed. Shag (Phalacrócorax aristótelis, Krähenscharbe): 1, flying. The bill was yellow. Great White Egret (Casmerodius albus, Silberreiher): 1, on the water's edge. The bill of the bird was yellow. Mallard (Anas platyrhýnchos, Stockente): 1 male, swimming. Common Tern (Sterna hirúndo, Flußseeschwalbe): 3, flying and diving. Stonechat (Saxícola torquáta, Schwarzkehlchen): 1 male, in a reedbed. This area was found by returning to road SP 58 and turning right into an unpaved track at kilometre 3.5. After about 3 km one reaches a car park at the east side of the water expanse, from where one has a good view on the birds in the shallow water. – The following bird species were observed. Little Egret (Egrétta garzétta, Seidenreiher): 2, at the water's edge. Purple Heron (Árdea purpúrea, Purpurreiher): 1, flying. Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber, Rosaflamingo): 210, in shallow water. Mallard (Anas platyrhýnchos, Stockente): 5 males, swimming. Black-winged Stilt (Himántopus himántopus, Stelzenläufer): 30, in shallow water. Eurasian Avocet (Recurviróstra avosétta, Säbelschnäbler): 50, in shallow water or swimming. Grey Plover (Pluviális squataróla, Kiebitzregenpfeifer): 8, on the water's edge, moulting into the breeding plumage. Little Stint (Calídris minúta, Zwergstrandläufer): 2, in shallow water. The following bird species were observed at the edge of Stagno Sale Pórcus, a water expanse with very low water level. Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginósus, Rohrweihe): 1 female, flying. Barn Swallow (Hirúndo rústica, Rauchschwalbe): 1, flying. Sardinian Warbler (Sýlvia melanocéphala, Samtkopfgrasmücke): 1, in a shrub.
IMG 0427 26.04.2008, 11:55-15:30 Badde Orca, Monte Mannu, Provincia di Sassari (Sardinia, Italy) 22 °C, fair. This area was reached from Bosa on road SP 19. At kilometre 9.4 one follows the turn-off to Badde Orca and reaches after 5.4 km the end of this secondary road, which is narrow, but in very good condition. At the end of the road are two closed gates. Between them is an accessible path along stone walls and shrubs. After about 500 m begins pasture land. On the right side of a closed gate one crosses a stone wall and reaches the slope, from where one has a look on the coastal road and the sea. Right from the before mentioned two closed gates at the end of the paved road begins a path into the mountainous area, which we followed for an hour before we turned back. – The following 22 bird species were observed in this area. To explore the bird life of Stagno di San Teodoro I started an excursion along the coastline from the Bar Ristorante L'Esagonale in the Via Cala D'ambra via the harbour to the dune, which separates the lagoon from the sea. On the return trip I left the beach already much earlier at a great car parking at the northern end of San Teodoro. To reach the area, insert into your navigation system: San Teodoro, Via Aosta 4. That is the last street at the northern end of San Teodoro. From there drive about 500 m northwards, then turn right to the sea and park your car on the large car park. Then walk northwards about 700 m along the coast line, cross the dune and walk about 250 m through grassland to the edge of the lagoon. – The following bird species were observed during this excursion. Great Crested Grebe (Pódiceps cristátus, Haubentaucher): 3, swimming. Great Cormorant (Phalacrócorax carbo, Kormoran): 1 juv., on a rock. Head wedge-shaped.
