Introduction

The North Sea Coast of Schleswig-Holstein with the National Park Schleswig-Holsteinsches Wattenmeer is one of the most interesting birding sites in Europe. Every year thousands of waders, geese, ducks and gulls are foraging or roosting in the mudflats or on saltmarshes, meadows or farmland in the polders during their flight to the winter quarters in autumn or back to their breeding grounds in spring.

Already for many years I used to spend a week in April or in September in this area only for birdwatching from the dykes. In this autumn I rented a room in the Hotel Eiderkrog (Olversumer Straße 16, D-25832 Tönning, 55 DM per night including breakfast, September 11 – 15, 2001, telephone and fax 04861-400, http://www.eiderkrog.city-map.de). From Tönning or more exactly from Olversum I visited Meldorfer Speicherkoog, Westerhever Sand, Katinger Watt, Oldensworter Deichvorland, Beltringharder Koog, Hauke-Haien-Koog, and Fahretofter Koog. For these excursions I used a car and a bicycle.

All ornithological observation were registered daily in the databank OrniDB 97, developed by Ralf Schirmeister (www.ralf-schirmeister.de for download) and were edited in two different ways. Under the heading "Excursions" one finds the complete records to the different observation places in chronological order. Under the heading "Systematically Ordered List of Bird and Mammal Species" one finds the date, the place, and the number of observed individuals in systematic order.

According to the computer programme 73 bird and 2 mammal species were observed and nearly 21 000 individuals were registered.

For orientation in the area I used the following maps:
Kompass Wanderkarte 717 (Heide-Dithmarschen), 1 : 50000 scale.
Kompass Wanderkarte 712 (Husum-St. Peter Ording), 1 : 50000 scale.

Goose (Anser spec.? unbestimmte Gans):
