Introduction

From October 20 – 26, 2011 I visited  the German island of Helgoland in the North Sea for birdwatching. Due to strong winds I had to wait a day in Cuxhaven prior to the passage to the island. I used this day for birdwatching at the North Sea coast near Cuxhaven.

Itinerary
October 18, 2011: Drive by train from Berlin to Cuxhaven via Hamburg. In the late afternoon walk from the Hotel to the harbour and along the sea dyke to the abandoned ferry harbour.
October 19, 2011: Walk from the Hotel along the sea dyke to Kugelbake, a famous navigation mark at the mouth of the river Elbe and hotspot for seawatching.
October 20, 2011: Passage from Cuxhaven to Helgoland with the ferryboat Funny Girl. In the afternoon first exscursion to Nordoststrand, the north-eastern beach of the island.
October 21, 2011: From 09:30 until 13:00 birdwatching on the north-eastern beach (Nordoststrand), from 17:00 until 18:00 on the beach of Kringel.
October 22, 2011: In the morning birdwatching at Kringel and walk to the beginning of the steep coast. In the afternoon walk around the Oberland.
October 23, 2011: From 09:00 until 13:00 birdwatching on the north-eastern beach (Nordoststrand), from 15:30 until 17:30 on the beach of Kringel.
October 24, 2011: Passage with a small boat to the neighbouring island Düne. Birdwatching mainly on the northern beach in strong wind. Return to the main island at 15:30.
October 25, 2011: From 09:00 until 13:00 again birdwatching on the north-eastern beach (Nordoststrand), from 16:00 until 17:00 on the beach of Kringel.

October 26, 2011: In the morning of the last day once more birdwatching on the north-eastern beach (Nordoststrand) and in the early afternoon on the beach of Kringel. At 16:00 passage with the ferry boat Funny Girl from Helgoland to Cuxhaven. From there by rail back to Berlin via Hamburg. Arrival in Berlin before midnight.

Registration of the observations
All ornithological observations were registered in the databank OrniDB97–2.20, developed by Ralf Schirmeister (www.ralf-schirmeister.de for download) and were edited in two different ways. Under the heading "Excursions" one finds the complete records to the different observation places in chronological order. Under the heading "Species List" one finds the date, the place, and the number of observed individuals in systematic order. In the section Excursions some photos give an impression of the visited areas, in the Species List one finds some photos of birds taken by a Canon EOS 1D Mark III in combination with a telephoto lens Canon EF 600 mm, f/4L IS USM and the Extender EF 2x II. Some of the photos were taken with a Panasonic Lumix G3 with the telephoto lens Lumix G Vario 1:4.0-5.6/100-300 mm.
