Flight from Berlin-Tegel to Zürich. Drive with a
rented car from the airport via Winterthur, St. Gallen, and St. Margrethen
to Fußach near Bregenz (Austria). Bird watching on the water expanses of the
River Rhine, the Lagoon and the Fußach Bay. In the afternoon drive to

DSCN 1679 09.12.2002, 13:45-14:20 Hegne – Reichenau, hiking tour, KN (Baden-Württemberg, Germany) –5 °C, overcast. From the railway station Hegne I walked along the railway and later on a paved track up to the causeway from the mainland to the Island of Reichenau. The following bird species could be observed. Common Buzzard (Búteo búteo, Mäusebussard): 1, calling in flight. Blackbird (Turdus mérula, Amsel): 4, on grassland. Blue Tit (Parus caerúleus, Blaumeise): 1, in a shrub. Jay (Gárrulus glandárius, Eichelhäher): 4, on grassland. Carrion Crow (Corvus coróne coróne, Rabenkrähe): 1, on grassland. 09.12.2002, 14:20 Reichenau, causeway to the island, KN (Baden-Württemberg, Germany) –5 °C, overcast. I walked on the causeway from the carpark to the Castle of Schopflen (Burg Schopflen) on the Island of Reichenau. Especially at the end of the walk I had good views on both sides of the causeway to the water expanses of the Gnadensee and the Ermatinger Becken. In the last mentioned area there were thousands of roosting water birds. Great Crested Grebe (Pódiceps cristátus, Haubentaucher): 1, swimming. Great Cormorant (Phalacrócorax carbo, Kormoran): 5 (at least), flying. Common Heron (Árdea cinérea, Graureiher): 1, at the edge of a reedbed. Mute Swan (Cygnus olor, Höckerschwan): 50 ad., swimming on the lake. Goose (Anser spec., unbestimmte Gans): 5, flying over the lake. Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeáta, Löffelente): 1 male, among Tufted Ducks and Pochards. Common Pochard (Áythya férina, Tafelente): 1000 (at least), at the edge of a reedbed. Tufted Duck (Áythya fulígula, Reiherente): 1000 (at least), at the edge of a reedbed. Black Coot (Fúlica atra, Bleßralle): 1000 (at least), at the edge of a reedbed. Great Tit (Parus major, Kohlmeise): 4, on a poplar on the causeway. Eurasian Nuthatch (Sitta europáea, Kleiber): 1, on a poplar on the causeway. Common Tree Creeper (Cérthia familiáris, Waldbaumläufer): 1, on a poplarl. Flanks white.

Red-crested Pochard (Netta rúfina, Kolbenente): 20, swimming, Common Pochard (Áythya férina, Tafelente): 100 (at least), swimming. Tufted Duck (Áythya fulígula, Reiherente): 1000 (at least), swimming. Black Coot (Fúlica atra, Bleßralle): 200 (at least), swimming.

Arriving on the track along the westbank of the Rhine River I walked anticlockwise around the lagoon. – The following bird species were observed on the water expanse of the lagoon. There were overwhelming numbers of ducks on the water expanses west of the lagoon. I did not try to count them. Great Cormorant (Phalacrócorax carbo, Kormoran): 600, on trees at the lake shore. Mute Swan (Cygnus olor, Höckerschwan): 8 ad., swimming. Common Pochard (Áythya férina, Tafelente): 100 (at least). Tufted Duck (Áythya fulígula, Reiherente): 100 (at least). Auf dem Rückweg wurden zu den bereits am Morgen notierten Arten noch festgestellt: Black-necked Grebe (Pódiceps nigricóllis, Schwarzhalstaucher): 1, in non-breeding plumage with characteristic red eyes. Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus, Sumpfohreule): 1, flying southwards along the dyke of the River Rhine. – First personal obvservation. 12.10.2003, 13:25-15:00 Fußach, lake dyke (Seedamm), Vorarlberg (Austria) 17 °C, sunny. At the end of my excursions in the nature reserve Vorarlberger Rheindelta I walked along the lake dyke (Seedamm) in the direction of Rohrspitz. – The following bird species could be observed. Common Heron (Árdea cinérea, Graureiher): 50, at the edge of a reedbed. Ruff (Philomáchus pugnax, Kampfläufer): 1, in shallow water near the edge of a reedbed (photos). Curlew (Numénius arquáta, Großer Brachvogel): 300, roosting in shallow water near the edge of a reedbed (photos). Black Redstart (Phoenicúrus ochrúros, Hausrotschwanz): 1, on a willow tree. Great Cormorant (Phalacrócorax carbo, Kormoran): 80 (at least), on trees of a cormorant colony with more than 100 nests. I saw this colony for the first time. Maybe it was a new one.
